What ChatGPT does well for PMs
ChatGPT is genuinely useful across many PM workflows. It excels at: synthesizing large amounts of text (customer feedback, research findings), drafting stakeholder communications, generating alternative framings for a problem, brainstorming edge cases, and preparing interview questions. For ad-hoc, exploratory work, it's an excellent AI assistant.
ChatGPT for PRD writing: the limitations
Writing PRDs with ChatGPT is possible but has significant limitations in practice. The main issues:
- Inconsistent structure: Unless you maintain a detailed PRD prompt, ChatGPT will produce differently structured documents each time. Teams that share PRDs with stakeholders and engineers need consistent, predictable format.
- No engineering ticket generation: ChatGPT can draft ticket descriptions but doesn't auto-generate a full set of structured engineering tickets from a PRD, let alone push them to Linear or Jira.
- No versioning or history: ChatGPT doesn't maintain version history of your PRDs. Every conversation is ephemeral unless you copy output manually.
- No integrations: There's no native way to push output from ChatGPT to Linear, Jira, GitHub Issues, or Notion without copy-pasting.
When to use ChatGPT vs a dedicated PRD tool
Use ChatGPT when you need: ad-hoc analysis, drafting emails and presentations, exploring problem framing, or one-off research synthesis. Use Scriptonia when you need: systematic PRD generation, engineering ticket creation, project management integrations, team collaboration, or version history. Many PMs use both: Scriptonia for PRD generation, ChatGPT for research and communication work.
High-value ChatGPT prompts for PMs
If you do use ChatGPT for PRDs, these prompts produce the best results: "Write a PRD for [feature] targeting [user]. Include: problem statement, user stories (As a/I want/So that format), success metrics, technical constraints, edge cases, and out-of-scope items. Format each section with an H2 header." Saving this as a Custom GPT or system prompt ensures consistency.
ChatGPT vs Claude for PM work
Both ChatGPT and Claude are strong for PM work. Claude tends to produce longer, more structured output and is better at following complex multi-step instructions — which matters for PRD generation. ChatGPT is more widely used and has better plugin/tool integrations via its API. For PRD writing specifically, Scriptonia (which uses frontier AI models) outperforms both because it's purpose-built for the use case.
